Carmen, a neighbour, was visiting and was appalled that this mat was on the floor as a dish mat for my dog. She received the mat as a Xmas present.

Tundra's Mat

This mat was made for my brother's dogs food dish. I said I would make it for Xmas. As fate would have it, Tundra died on boxing day. As he lived in Calgary and I had not sent the mat, he did not have a chance to eat from it, but he might know that we were thinking of him then.

This is a hall runner 34" x 12'. Because I haven't finished hooking yet, this is approximately 6' of it. This has been the largest single project for me. Can't wait till it is done and on the floor.

This was the second mat that was hooked with hand cut wool strips, of garments as found, regarding colour. This one I still have.

This is the first mat I hooked after coming back from Newfoundland, where I was first introduced to mat hooking. I had no instruction and knew nothing about fabric dyeing.
My wife Dorothy, on the next trip to the maritimes, left it on a picnic bench in Newbrunswick. I did hook her another one .

Mormon Trail

Some of my ancestors, some 150 years ago, travelled over the Mormon Trail. (Perhaps not in this good condition.)
The first to go over the trail used hand carts and only took the absolute necessities to see them thru the 1700 miles from Nauvoo, Illinois to Salt Lake City, Utah.

This was inspired by a trip to the Yukon in 2003
The vastness, coupled with the vistas, take your breath away. It was early spring. The caribou had already made their way to Alaska to calve. On my return, it required three months to design, dye the wool, hook and finish.
